NVDHS General Meeting

Guest speaker John McFeeters is an avid detectorist and finder of historic artifacts. He will talk about his fascinating hobby and show us the various treasures he has located in our area.

He has done metal detecting on many public and private properties over the years, including abandoned homesteads, schools and churches. Locally, this includes Ebor House; the site of the Samuel Wilmot homestead and Fish Hatchery; and the original Massey foundry site. 

Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Community Hall

In May, NVDHS collaborated with Vatandoust Sirrs Real Estate Team to produce a special edition of their On The House magazine to honour the 100th anniversary of the Newcastle Community Hall. On The House is distributed free to all households in Newcastle, Orono and Wilmot Creek – you should have received your copy by now. If you haven’t, we have additional copies available at the historical room, so drop by any time we’re open (9:30 to noon, Tuesdays and Saturdays) to pick up your free copy.

Cancelled

We regret to announce that due to low ticket sales/interest in the events on July 1, we have made the decision to cancel both. We hope to hold similar events in the future, on a date that doesn’t conflict so much with family activities and vacation plans. If you bought tickets for the dance, please contact Myno Van Dyke for a refund.

Explanation and Highlights

Due to the enactment of the Ontario Not-for-Profit Corporations Act (2010) in October, 2021, the Society had to review and revise our Constitution and create a set of by-laws in order to be in compliance with the new legislation.

We took the opportunity to review every aspect of our governance and have made a few changes, as follows:

• We now have a separate Constitution and By-laws.
• Number of directors is now 9-13.
• Electronic meetings are now specifically permitted
• Terms of office for all directors and officers is one year, with no limit on number of times a director/officer may be reelected.
• Notice of member’s meetings is now 10 days (minimum) to 50 days (maximum) prior to the meeting.

Robert (Bob) Malone, former President of the Newcastle Village & District Historical Society passed away December 21, 2022. Bob was born in Belfast, Ireland on September 28, 1939. His parents, William and Elizabeth Malone, immigrated to Canada after WW2 and settled in Montreal Quebec. Bob had four sisters, Patricia, Maureen, Donna and Theresa.

Bob’s father was a naval war veteran and Bob followed in his footsteps enlisting as a “Trooper” with the Royal Canadian Army 17th DYRC HUSSARS in Montreal.   Bob also graduated from Concordia University with a Commerce degree. This education enabled him to work in a variety of jobs in commercial and industrial real estate mostly in the railway industry. He worked for Canadian Pacific, Canadian Nation, Canarail International and the Grand Trunk Railway.  In 1967, he married Rosemary Hachey and they had two daughters Laura and Amanda.
